Markland Hill

Curriculum Intent

Every single child at Markland Hill is given the opportunity to achieve their absolute best.

We have designed an exciting and ‘unique’ curriculum, which nurtures passions, interests and stimulates intellectual curiosity and a deep love of learning.  Our curriculum is broad and exciting; it is filled with practical experiences to engage and motivate the children to always want to learn more.

In delivering our curriculum, we aim to remove any barriers to learning so that ALL children are able to make progress across the whole school curriculum. Our curriculum is bespoke to the needs of Markland Hill children and is designed to be broad and balanced and equip all learners for the 21stcentury. The Markland Hill curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum, embedded overtime and is routed in our locality. Our curriculum is underpinned by the excellent teaching of knowledge, skills and values which are embedded into our curriculum and offer children numerous opportunities to engage with meaningful learning.

We aim to ensure that all children will be confident, articulate and effective communicators by the time they leave our school. Through our curriculum, we want all our children to develop resilience and independence when it comes to learning. Our children are critical thinkers, curious and eager to extend their knowledge.

Our curriculum design, based on our two year rolling programme, builds on prior knowledge and skills through regular review and revisiting of content and sequencing. We constantly adapt our learning journey to meet the needs and interests of our children, offering an excellent education underpinned by a broad, culturally rich and powerful curriculum to ensure that all pupils are well equipped for the next stages in their education.

Children leave Markland Hill with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.

Our curriculum will give children the opportunity to:

  • Develop a lifelong love of learning
  • Learn within a coherent and progressive framework
  • Develop a rich and deep subject knowledge
  • Develop new skills through a variety of interesting contexts
  • Develop and demonstrate their creativity
  • Understand the purpose and value of their learning and see its relevance to their past, present and future
  • Experience the challenge and enjoyment of learning

We aim to ensure that all children have a secure understanding of Fundamental British Values, gain an understanding of equal opportunity, are able to celebrate the richness and diversity of the society in which they live and are fully prepared for life as a global citizen.

Through the engaging and stimulating curriculum, we want the children to be able to make positive choices in terms of their social interactions, health and personal wellbeing and we also have a high focus on ensuring the children will be confident with technological developments and highly computer literate.

A key approach to achieving our curriculum intent is for our curriculum to be filled with rich first-hand experiences and bring learning to life. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and to celebrate and develop the individual talents of our pupils, recognising everyone as unique with their own ambitions, skills and dreams.

Curriculum Implementation

To ensure that our bespoke curriculum is delivered to the highest standard, Markland Hill has a clear strategic overview for curriculum implementation. Our teachers have excellent subject knowledge and we used the specific skills and talents of our staff to deliver excellent teaching and learning in phase teams.

High standards and expectations across school mean that all learning is effective and well planned. We ensure children are able to read with fluency and understanding so they are able to access all subject areas. This takes high priority as does the focus on knowledge and improving the children’s long-term memories. We want all children to be able to remember the content taught, make links and connections, by building on prior knowledge.

Subject knowledge, skills and concepts are taught discretely in subject areas so that our children gain a broad understanding of each subject and know exactly which subject they are studying. However, the curriculum is designed to embed transferable skills throughout. We plan our lessons with clear learning objectives. We base these upon the teacher’s detailed knowledge of each child, ensuring tasks set are appropriate to each child’s level of ability. English and Mathematical skills are effectively promoted across all subjects. The progress of all children is closely monitored and the curriculum is designed to ensure that any identified gaps are closed. Learning outside the classroom and concrete, real life opportunities plays a pivotal role in the delivery of the Markland Hill curriculum and is effective in breaking down any barriers to learning by offering additional opportunities for experiential and practical learning, including trips out, visitors and workshops.

At Markland Hill School, we recognise the importance of feedback, both adult and peer, as an integral part of the teaching and learning cycle, and aim to maximise the effectiveness of its use in practice.

Our curriculum will be taught through pedagogy that:

  • Excites, promotes and sustains children’s interest
  • Promotes problem solving, creativity and communication
  • Enables and fosters children’s natural curiosity
  • Offers all children a memorable experience at the start of a topic
  • Promotes innovation and entrepreneurialism
  • Enables children to reflect on and evaluate learning

Curriculum Impact

We evaluate our curriculum regularly, gathering the views of all stakeholders. The impact the curriculum has on our children as learners is rigorously evaluated.  Precise and focussed actions within the School Development Plan drive the continual refinement of the curriculum to ensure it continues to meet the needs of all pupils.  Learning is reviewed and monitored through regular learning walks, book scrutinies, pupil voice, evidence trails and pupil progress meetings.

Progress is assessed regularly. At the end of each term, assessment data is gathered and progress is checked by Core and Foundation Subject Leaders and the Senior Leadership Team. In cases where children are identified as making ‘less than expected progress’ in English and Maths, rapid interventions are put in place to address gaps in learning.

We have produced bespoke pupil progress tracking systems and documents to ensure that knowledge and skills are progressive and build on the children’s prior knowledge and learning. The outcomes of National assessments demonstrate that when children leave Markland Hill, they are very well prepared for the next stage in their education.

Children are immersed in values and real life skills, ensuring they become confident citizens and lifelong learners.

The excellent quality of teaching and daily ongoing assessment is a crucial method of assessment which provides instant feedback to the teacher and ensures progress within every lesson. Assessment for Learning strategies are evident in all lessons and these strategies provide a clear picture of a child’s level of understanding. This ensure that teachers can quickly assess when a child does not understand and needs greater support. Lessons are flexible enough to allow teachers to adapt to the needs of the children.
